Gear Review: the EXO Mountain Gear K4 5,000
In today’s post I wanted to share my experiences with a new piece of gear that has been an absolute game-changer for me: The EXO Mountain Gear K4 5,000 cubic inch pack.
Initial Impressions
Let's jump right to it. Previously, I lugged around an Alps Outdoorz Extreme Commander Pro X, a hefty pack that served me well but weighed a significant nine pounds. Seeking a lighter and more spacious upgrade, I opted for the EXO K4 5000. Although this pack comes with a premium price tag, it has proven its worth every penny during my time in the field so far. This pack comes in at five pounds and thirteen ounces which is a critical factor for a backpacking hunter.
Field Test: Handling Heavy Loads
Fortunately on our last hunt, Jordan was able to bag a nice public land bull and I had the chance to put the K4 through its paces with two loaded trips. The first trek involved half a mile with a hefty front quarter, while the second stretched over six miles with 70 to 80 pounds of deboned meat. Impressively, the K4 handled these hauls like a champ. What stood out most was its ability to distribute weight effectively, minimizing strain to my calves and traps despite the challenging terrain. The external frame was a key proponent in the first trip with the leg bone still attached. If the pack had an internal frame this wouldn’t have been possible. The other major feature I noticed was that the load of meat didn’t move around once secured to the frame. It was rock solid and not bouncing around with every step.
Design and Features
Now that we’ve discussed the most important part, let's talk more about design specifics. The K4 features oversized hip belts that snugly secure around the hips, preventing discomfort even with substantial loads. I was impressed by the lack of pinching around the waist after a long haulout. I was expecting some sore areas from the hip belt but they weren’t there. The pack also has MOLLE webbing on the sides that accommodates accessories like my Mystery Ranch Rangefinder pouch and Alien Gear holster, ensuring easy access without compromising on pack stability. You can also find tons of third party MOLLE attachments that will work with this pack. Moreover, the pack remained remarkably quiet and well-ventilated, which was crucial during hot days when the thick foam prevented sweat from affecting the meat's quality.
Storage and Organization
Organization-wise, the K4 shines. It boasts deep side pouches capable of holding essentials like my bugle tube, trekking poles, and Nalgene bottle. Additional zippered compartments on the lid and front panel provide ample space for storing electronics, first aid supplies, and personal items, keeping everything neatly organized and easily accessible. This pack is capable of handling enough gear and supplies including food for at least 7 days.
Comfort and Adjustability
Comfort is key during extended hunts, and the K4 delivers. Adjustable frame height and well-padded straps ensure a customizable fit, minimizing discomfort and distributing weight evenly. The pack's thoughtful design, including multiple attachment points for gear and a dedicated waterproof water bladder compartment, further enhances its functionality in the field.
Final Thoughts
In conclusion, the EXO Mountain Gear K4 5,000 pack has surpassed my expectations. Its robust construction, thoughtful design, and impressive performance under load make it a worthy investment for serious hunters and outdoor enthusiasts alike. While it may not be the ideal choice for beginners due to its higher cost, its durability and comfort justify the expense for those committed to extended backcountry excursions.
